A performance appraisal provides an opportunity for communication between a manager and their member of staff to discuss what they expect from each other and how those expectations are being met.

Appraisals should not be tense negotiations, nor casual social chit chat. They are essential communications between two people working towards the same goal.

Performance Appraisals are carried out usually once every 12 months, using a formal format.

Performance Reviews are carried out as often as you want to review progress between appraisals, the format can be either informal or formal.
